Earwigs in basements and crawlspaces
Lower levels naturally sit closer to soil, foundation edges and utility penetrations. They may also stay cooler and damper, so this location deserves a more specific check than “bugs like basements.”

- Musty odor, condensation or standing water
- Wet insulation, wood or stored materials
What to inspect without taking risks
- Observe accessible wall-floor edges and plumbing penetrations.
- Check whether downspouts discharge near the affected exterior wall.
- Look for persistent wet soil, low spots and debris against the foundation.
- Do not enter an unsafe crawlspace or disturb wiring, damaged material or suspected contamination.
Earwigs do not establish that a foundation or waterproofing system has failed. Visible or measurable moisture is the relevant evidence.
